The Missouri Environmental Coalition: A Comprehensive History of Environmentalism in Central Missouri

As communities, towns, and cities developed in Missouri, so too did the environmental issues they faced. From soil and waterway contamination to air pollution, resource depletion, and the safe disposal of hazardous waste, Missourians had to confront a variety of environmental problems. In response to these issues, the Missouri Environmental Coalition (MCE) was established as an independent citizen organization devoted to promoting clean water, clean air, clean energy, and a healthy environment. The MCE was not the first group to address environmental policy matters in the region. The Louis Environmental Conference at the Missouri Botanical Garden was the first independent citizen organization created to tackle a wide range of environmental policy issues.

In addition to these organizations, Louis Post-Dispatch cartoonists Daniel Robert Fitzpatrick and Tom Engelhardt used their cartoons to draw attention to environmental issues and concerns in both Missouri and across the nation. Through their work, they highlighted the importance of protecting our environment and preserving our natural resources. Today, the MCE continues its mission of advocating for a healthy environment in central Missouri. The organization works with local governments, businesses, and citizens to ensure that our environment is safeguarded for future generations. Through its various initiatives and campaigns, the MCE strives to make sure that our environment is safe and healthy for all. The MCE has been instrumental in advocating for environmental protection in central Missouri.

The organization has worked with local governments to pass legislation that protects our air and water quality. It has also worked with businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices. Additionally, the MCE has partnered with citizens to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage them to take action. The MCE has also been involved in numerous campaigns that have had a positive impact on the environment. For example, it has worked with local governments to create green spaces in urban areas.

Its work has helped protect our environment for future generations and ensure that our air and water remain clean and safe. By working with local governments, businesses, and citizens, the MCE is helping create a healthier future for all.
